Ariane: Burnaby, BC, Canada

Bio: Ariane (aka Midge) is a prairie gal who moved out to west for university in 1998, and never left. She now avoids working on her thesis and nurtures her eccentricity through knitting, music, reading, painting, photography, cooking, trying to embrace exercise, and of course gardening. She currently resides in a condo, and is lucky to have a balcony for the herbs, and a community garden plot nearby. Her ongoing battle against slugs and wood bugs keeps her feisty, but she persists due to her love of fresh veggies and herbs, and her desire to feed them to anyone who happens by.

Fall garden update

Garden update

We managed to upgrade our plot this year! Last year we had one along the evil bottom row, which has trees along the south side (ie. less sun), and is at the bottom of the slope (ie. really damp). We lucked out and got one along

I know this isn't exactly about gardening, but it is about a fellow avid gardener who passed away earlier this week. I don't know how many people know of Jane Jacobs, myself having studied human geography and urban planning in university, she is one of my idols.

Spring and fig advice

Since everyone else is doing their spring updates... Well, it's finally getting to the point where I'm not afraid it's going to snow again up on the hill, so time to think about getting back into the dirt! So far, I have renewed the old garden plot, though I'm

Fall seed saving

Melon season has brought to me a new hobby: seed saving. I know it may surprising, but this has never been a priority for me... This year, however, was different, because over the course of the past month, I have eaten some of the best melons

End of summer wrap-up

Hey everyone! Hope the rest of your summer has been going well! As you may or may not recall, things got off to an incredibly slow start this year due to all the rain that we got out west. But, as it's better late than

A Slow July

Well, better late than never, here is my review of July--it consisted of more aphid infestation and finally planting the community garden plot (yay!) Just after ridding my herb boxes of the green aphids that sucked the life out of the dill, a new breed decided to take up

the good, the bad, and the really ugly.

I began the season with high spirits, unfortunately, the ugly weather out here has put a cramp in my grand plans. My garden plot is a bog and has subsequently STILL not been planted. I don't know how much longer I can hold out, but the

May!

Gayla has been kind enough to let me in on the plant journal action, thanks! So, to update, I went with some friends down to the VanDusen plant sale last weekend. Meet my new little friends, and some old ones! plants.JPG A new
