Kelly: Nelson, BC, Canada

Bio: Kelly is a native prairie girl used to huge fields of mustard and wheat. When she moved out to Vancouver, B.C. she discovered an area where gardening could be done almost three-fourths of the year and went nuts. From there she moved to Nelson, B.C. a small city nestled on the side of the Kootenay mountains. She is currently planning her next move - but is not quite sure where that'll be yet. When she's not playing with her plants she works (mostly for free) in the art department for films, takes lots of photos, and can be seen haunting the isles of her local art store where she works to pay the bills.

Starting

And almost as though to laugh at me in the face in regards to my last post, it has been snowing, snowing, snowing here for approximately four hours today, and sticking to boot. It started just as I had arrived home from buying myself a plastic flat,

Awaiting

I wish there was something wonderful and exciting for me to report, but alas, there's only something I feel is wonderful and exciting to half-report. I feel the spring in the air, and white the other side of the continent from me is frozen, dreary, and covered in snow,

Reflections on Where I Am

Since moving to Nelson I've discovered many things, not only about small towns, but also just about living in a climate that is pretty much smack dab in the middle of where I grew up, and where I've been living the past five years. I also have no land.

Packing up for the winter.

It's definitely getting colder here in Nelson. You can't walk outdoors without a jacket (it feels like a distant dream when it was 40 degrees straight that week), the clouds are so low you can almost touch them, and it's getting dark at 6pm. Everybody's packing in their

At last…

So after leaving my little garden back 600 KM away in Vancouver, I'm left wondering "what does it look like now? Has it been mowed over, or is it being nurtured?" Either way, I'll never know so it's time to drop it. I've secured myself a living domicile here

Leaving the Garden Behind

Well, it's come to the time when I have to stay goodbye to the garden I've built and worked for two years. But that's okay, as my mother says "there'll be other gardens to sow", and she's right. But still, it's always hard saying goodbye.

Abandoning the Plot

Yesterday as I looked out on my little garden and picked out the weeds, it occured to me that I won't get to see the fruits of my labour this year. In about three weeks I'll be gone, off to another city. The finalization of this happened only

Promoting Composting

A little while ago I was wandering around the City of Vancouver's website, specifically the parks and engineering services sections. Seems a little bizzare, I know, but I then happened upon this website. Apparently the City of Vancouver in their effort to cut back waste,

Musings on Plants

Today I was eyeing the plants at my grocery store. We all know not to ever expect much from the grocery store plants, as they're usually completely neglected, dry, and limp looking if not half (or totally) dead. However, the grocery store plants are the closest

Starting it Off

So a few days ago I got my garden all nice and prepared for the bounty of plants that I'll be planting this year. The goal: An Urban Oasis. I live in a pretty busy part of town, it's a residential area but it's right by a main

Don’t have room for a garden? Knit Your Own!

So besides being an avid gardening, I've an avid knitter. That means I'm always looking for cool new things to knit up. Today I got the idea in my head "hey, what about knitting plants??" So after a little searching I found these awesome knit plants that you can

A little update

So I thought I'd make a little update because I've been thinking a lot about gardening lately, but it's been all thinking and no action. After we had are weird little cold snap about a month ago (it snowed, do you hear me?) I got all down and thought

Spring? In January?

It all started last week. On my way to work I noticed a dogwood tree, and the very beginning of some blossoms. I thought to myself, no way, my eyes are fooling me! I live in a warm climate, but it's only the second week

June Update

It's time for the update, and I'm pleased. Well, sort of. My garden is going slower than I would have liked, but it's going strong regardless. Finally, last weekend I got everything in the ground that'll be there for this year. That means I

The New Plot

Today I threw in a few plants and a few seeds to my new garden just as the sun was going down and it started to rain. I'm glad I'm finally getting things started! The rest of the plants will be already started. I don't

New garden: Dug!

So I finally got it done - yesterday admist the gloom of a rainy day, I dug my garden. It only took me about 1.5-2 hours, and it's about 4x3 feet (I figured I could always expand it a bit more if I needed to). I

Seed starting

I finally started my seeds today - a little later than I usually do, but what can I say? Unfortunately, due to the constrains of my place I don't have much room to start seeds indoors, so I'm leaving the bulk of my plants this year to direct sowing

And so it begins.

I took at stroll down to Granville Island (which isn't an island, nor is it on Granville St.), where I happened upon a gardening shop that I had never seen before. Besides all the cool garden supplies they already had a good stock of herb, veggie and

New year!

So I thought I'd finally make another update on this blog since I haven't done so in [insert embarrassing long ago date here]. It's a new year, and with that I'm planning on good things for my garden. Since moving to urban Vancouver I haven't had my little

Time to show off my handywork.

Well, it's definately smaller than my own patch of land last year, but at least it's something and I love it. So, while planting yesterday I took photos to share with everybody! Let's start with a few establishing shots, shall we (including the lovely gravel driveway I open
