Daily Botanical: Pea Flower ‘Blue Podded Shelling’
We’ve been experiencing an interesting mix of cool days and nights mixed in with warm days this spring, conditions that have not boded well with the basil but has given a boost to my pea crops, especially those up on the roof. I think I’m growing my happiest and healthiest crop ever. I also happen to be growing my largest on the roof where I happily sowed very heavily for no reason other than that I was very eager back in March when winter was just ending its reign of torment for another eight or so months.
This variety, ‘Blue Podded Shelling’ is so beautiful I can’t imagine spring without its cheerful flowers and delicious, tender shoots. I’m extra grateful for these this year since I’m not growing any inedible sweet pea flowers.

I got my peas in much later than you. Normally, I’d be getting blooms by now, but nothing so far. Isn’t that blue pea just a gorgeous variety? The peas are pretty tough, especially if they plump out, but the flowers are just fantastic. I can’t wait!

Yes, I do find the peas tough but as you said, more-so when they plump out. The greens are very tender though. I eat that too. The toughness is good because then these make it to the table…. I eat the other peas off the vine while I’m working.

I’m growing these (same variety) in my little balcony garden. It’s the first time I’ve ever tried peas of any sort. All my other veggies are kinda miserable in this cool weather we’ve been having, so my peas have made themselves the stars of the show. They just started flowering last week, and I’m so excited! I was doubly so when I saw this picture on your blog :)

This year I’m trying out “Sweet pea pink cupid” in a container - so far OK. No flowers yet.
Bought the seed at Territorial Seed Co.

Looks beautiful. I am growing peas this year but I out them in late so the heat is not doing them good. Just this week it has been cool and rainy which is doing them well.

No pea blossoms yet this year, either. The weather has stunted a whole row of them, but the other one has taken off. I think they’re waiting for a bit more sun & warmth before blooming. :-(

Beautiful picture! My peas are also doing really well. First time planting most veggies including peas and I’m just so thrilled and impressed with how the pods are now busting out so vigorously. I will try more varieties next year, this year I stuck to “Wando” with plain white flowers.
