Daily Botanical: Gooseberries on the Way
I planted this gooseberry bush in my community garden plot last fall. The bush was an impulse purchase, on sale at a local garden store at a price I couldn’t ignore. I hemmed and hawed at the store, uncertain about whether I wanted to commit permanent space to a small bush. And now that it is starting to produce tiny fruit I think that question is answered by my excitement in imagining future jars of jam. Now if we could just find the space for a black currant bush I’d be in jam heaven.

I love gooseberries! Did you know you can also buy the jam at Ikea ?? :) I have a feeling I’d eat all the berries raw before making jam!

I’m embarrassed to say that I’ve never tasted a gooseberry. I am going to seek some out. I know they grow wild here.

Oh I love gooseberries!! My grandfather always grew them. I need to get a bush or two. Mmm!

Proof that sometimes we should just follow our impulses…especially if it doesn’t cost too much to do so.
I love the green colour of gooseberries and the jelly made from them.

I remember gooseberries from my great-grandmother’s garden. She didn’t make jam, but her gooseberry pie was absolutely the finest (she also owned a ran and bakery)! Not sure I can grow them here in Hawaii, even at a cooler 2300 feet.

like you, i found a gooseberry cutting at a price that i couldn’t walk away from. i’ve just planted it in a spot in the garden and i’m looking forward to some fruit. can’t wait!

Just bought a “gooseberry” bush (again, excellent price). No directions on planting though. We have small narrow backyard with sun & shade. Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks,
