Starting
And almost as though to laugh at me in the face in regards to my last post, it has been snowing, snowing, snowing here for approximately four hours today, and sticking to boot. It started just as I had arrived home from buying myself a plastic flat, jiffy pots, and two small flourescent lights that I could all affix to my kitchen windowsill to start growing myself some seedlings.
Not to be swayed by the downpour of snow, however, I strung up those lights and planted 24 little pots, full of herbs, cacti, tomatoes, and perennials. If it doesn’t warm up in time for those plants to go outside… well, I’ll just have to have a cramped window sill for a few weeks.
Always being a fan of pictures, here was the progression.
Please disregard the underwatered dieffenbachia in the upper right hand corner. This dieffenbachia and I have been at odds for months.

Do you know of any books or step by step programs for beginners interested in starting a small rooftop patio?

Well there’s this fantastic book called, “You Grow Girl” that just happens to lead beginners through the process of starting and maintaining a garden… and the focus is on urban and difficult spaces being that I am an urban gardener who primarily grows in containers on a rooftop.
