One of our cat’s favourite things these days is to hover around the sliding glass door in our kitchen and chatter at the birds that feed outside that door. Although I didn’t see any birds this morning, I could hear them outside the house somewhere, and Farley was pacing and chirping around that door for an hour while I drank my coffee and did some editing this morning.

I like to look at the evidence those birds leave in the snow.

Bird Prints

The prints were left by sparrows, and maybe the odd chickadee. The day before we had a couple of starlings picking at the suet but it’s unusual for them to come that close to the house. If you are very still, or move very slowly, you can get very close to the sparrows and chickadees, but the starlings are much more aware of our presence in the kitchen and fly away immediately. Two summers ago there were a couple of bluejays that would land on the fence outside the kitchen, and you could see them very clearly, they were so close. I’ll be happy when the weather warms up and we can watch our birds again.
