Winter Growth
The weather has been remarkably warm this winter, so far here in Ontario. Today I was out in the back yard for a few minutes. I just wanted to get some fresh air and it was sunny out and the yard is still fairly green. I took a look around, and to my surprise several plants were growing out there!
Garlic chives
Thyme
Mint
Sage
Lemon balm
Green onions
Rudbeckia
Hollyhock
Catnip
Honeysuckle
Leucanthemum
Chamomile
It’s crazy…
I put a few of the potted perennials I had tucked against the side of my house and put them in the mini-greenhouse, instead. They aren’t dead, yet, so I figured they might have a fighting chance in there for the remaining few months of “winter”. I also seeded a flat of soil with mesclun mix and spinach as an experiment in the mini-greenhouse. It sure would be nice if the weather stayed mild enough to grow some greens while I wait for seed-starting season to begin.

Alas, it looks like winter has finally shown its face. How long it will last is the question… I’m trying to decide if I should bother buying winter boots or just try to make do. :)

Yeah, we’re expecting 15 cm by this time tomorrow. At least I have a few green leaves in my mini-greenhouse!
