Aphid Invasion
This year I’ve been feeling pretty overwhelmed by aphids in my yard. On my dahlias, my poppies, the shasta daisies and of course the roses. Earlier they tried to take up residence on my pole beans and recently they also tried to move in on my chard. And of course in late spring/early summer I waged an all out war with them on my various rose bushes. I’ve been concocting a new batch of various anti-aphid sprays weekly. Mostly the “Herbal Buzz” and “Smellerific Citrus” versions from the book, with the odd dose of Dr. Bronner’s diluted peppermint castille soap when I’m feeling lazy. And still. The aphids. They are everywhere.
This weekend I decided to kind of give in, as long as I can keep them off my veggies and generally under control, I figured the stress just wasn’t worth it. But, somewhere deep down inside I was kind of feeling like a failed gardener. Until this morning! As is a part of my morning ritual, I turned on the radio to CBC 1 and began making coffee, and wouldn’t you know it, they were talking about the Vancouver aphid invasion of 2006. Or so I’m calling it. What they were really talking about was the explosion of aphids this year with our unusually long dry, hot summer to date. Suddenly everything clicked into place. As they talked about the sticky leaves on the sidewalks (covered in aphid secreted “honey”) and the troubles other gardeners were having I suddenly didn’t feel so alone.
How are your battles with the sticky ones going this year?

I don’t think any concoction can come up against an invasion of that sort!
We seem to be having the opposite experience this year in Toronto. I have seen very few aphids. It has been an unusually wet summer with a lot of wind. It’s warm during the day and seems to rain mostly at night. It’s been interesting. I have had more caterpillars and flea beetles on my deck for the first time ever.

Not only do we have an aphid invasion in our garden in San Diego, CA but the ants are multiplying the problem. They’ve got an incredible farming project going on our Chiapas corn (12 ft. high) and our beans. We can get the number of aphids down with cayanne spray, but then the ants spread them around again. Any ideas?

I’m in the Mission of San Francisco, and it’s my first year gardening. I feel much better now, knowing it’s not just me. The aphids were all over my chard, making a total mess of it, and all the spraying with Safer soap and sprinkling of diatomaceous earth (to keep the ants away) did not work. Tired of being confronted by gnarled, ugly chard, I pulled it up two days ago.
Now if only I could get rid of all the cut worms . . .

Oh no! I’m so sorry to hear you had to take out your chard Tracy. That truly sucks. Strangely one of my chard plants did much worse than the others, so I cut back all the nasty looking leaves and was vigilant with my sprays and have managed to save the rest. So sorry you had to take drastic measures!

Yes the aphids are out in abundance my squash flowers are aphid hotels. I highly recommend Neem oil to get some control on the situation… Neem oil seems to work for almost everything.

I’m in San Diego and have been invaded by both aphids and ants. My nursery expert recommended the following 2 step method: 1) wash off as many aphids as possible using a strong water spray, 2)mix 1 tbls. “blue dawn” dish soap (said it had to be the blue stuff)?, 1 tsp olive oil and 32 oz of water and spray on plant and under leaves. May need to be repeated. Seems to be working so now I’m tackling the ants.

I live in Los Angeles. I’ve been in an all out war with the aphids on my cucumber plant. Every day I would go out and hand spray the aphids off of EVERY SINGLE leaf with a garlic spray that worked last year on my flowers. But every day they would be back. I think I finally won the war when I used water with a little dish soap. Now I need to figure out why so many of my cucumbers turn black and die :(

HELP!! i am having the same type of problem here in the tropics (i live in puerto rico, and the aphids are the size of my fingernail!!). i am noticing them destroying the local scenery, and the problem has hit home. i have seen many sites where you can order lady bugs, but they seem to be a bit smaller than our bugs, and i am not sure they are native to this climate (that can cause a whole bunch of damage all around!).
anyone have a plan? i will try the neem oil!
