Perennial Delight
I survived the UBC Botanical Gardens Perinneal Plant Sale and have lived to tell the tale. It could not possibly have been a lovelier day for it, and I had a fabulous time even if I did end up leaving with only half of the things on my list. Of course, I made up for the lack of list completion by acquiring some lovely treats I hadn’t expected. In the end, exactly how these things go I suppose.
Anyway, for other plant nerds and the vicarious among you, I’ll include the full list of my haul below. I’ll definitely be bringing some kind of cart/wheelbarrow/wagon next year, this was a bit of a struggle to carry about, even with several trips to the plant holding area.
Oh, and if any of you have a book recommendation, I’ve realized I could really use a better guide to perennials that includes basic care, trouble shooting, and if possible extra geeky plant trivia. If you have a favorite, please do share!
My perennial haul:
- Anemone Hybrida ‘Honorine Jobert’: Japanese anemone, white flowers
- Anemone Huphensis var. japonica ‘Bresingham Glow’: Chinese anemone, dark pink flowers
- Helleborus Niger: Christmas rose, white flowers
- Lavandula stoechas ‘Otto Quast’: French Lavender
- Nepeta racemosa ‘Walker’s Low’: Cat Mint
- Symphytum: Comfrey, dark purple flowers
- Meconopsis betonicifolia: Himalayan Blue Poppy
- Geranium phaeum ‘Samboor’: mourning widow, dark violet flowers
- Geranium Sylvaticum: Wood Cranesbill, purple-blue flowers
- Geranium himalayense: Cranesbill, violet-blue flowers
- Dicentra ‘Langtrees’: Bleeding Heart
- Vibernum bodnantense ‘Dawn’: pink flowers with blue fruit (This is the one that I’m most excited about, which is probably why I haven’t yet decided where to plant it. It blooms in winter. Fun!)
- Polygonatum hybridum: Solomon’s Seal, ivory flowers with green tips
- Digitalis purpurea ‘Primrose yellow’: Foxglove, creamy yellow flowers

Thanks Wendy, I’ve just requested that at the library.
