Carrots on your rooftop
Yesterday I was perusing cnn.com for some news and came across a story about how rooftop gardening is becoming more popular here in the U.S. I know that in some European countries, especially Germany, this is quite common. I remember listening to a story on NPR a couple of years ago about this, and having never heard of it before then, I thought it was the coolest thing ever! And I guess I still do. There are SO many benefits - improvement of air quality, providing quiet and private places to relax, building insulation, frequent bird visitation, local food production - that it seems silly not to incorporate gardens on rooftops everywhere.
I know that in my city, this practice is really starting to grow. I’ve visited three rooftop gardens in the past year, and I know of a few others. Even Walmart, as evil as they might be, has decided to try to be a bit better by installing a garden on top of their new store in Chicago.

Chicago seems to be the hub of green roof activity these days. I keep hearing about everything that is happening there. I’m going next month and hope to see something.
I garden on our roof (although it is technically only the roof for half of our building) but it is a rooftop garden rather than a green roof in that I am using several containers on the roof rather than a solid mass of stuff. I do the bulk of my edible gardening on the roof and in many ways prefer it to my community garden plot.
And yes, this year I am growing carrots.
