As a follow-up to Christina’s post about eating local vs. organic, I thought y’all might be interested in the 100 Mile Diet site. The site is one of the pieces of a larger puzzle put together by a friend of mine, James MacKinnon, and his partner following their year of eating only foods sourced in a 100-mile radius from their home (which happens to also be my home, Vancouver BC). There’s plenty of info about their experience on the site, as well as a tool to help you figure out where your 100 mile radius stretches (if you’re in Canada or the US). There’s a follow-up book coming out in Spring of 2007 that documents their experience.

I can’t say that I’m about to embark on this myself, though I am very much looking forward to testing my goal of sourcing my daily produce from my two 4×4′ squares of veggie garden space for the summer months (how’s that for local?), and would certainly count myself among those who considers very carefully where her food comes from more often than not. I’m also a big one for the politics of food and definitely think this project is an interesting contribution.
