Starting it Off
So a few days ago I got my garden all nice and prepared for the bounty of plants that I’ll be planting this year.
The goal: An Urban Oasis.
I live in a pretty busy part of town, it’s a residential area but it’s right by a main street so I’m always fighting jerks walking through my garden and exhaust settling on my veggies and herbs.
This year I decided to get a cheap little fence and create a space that would be easily definable as a garden, hopefully cutting down people walking through it (as to why people are tromping through my lawn, that’s something else all together, I suspect it’s the next door neighbours).

The fence has sweet peas and black eyed susans planted all around it, with a row of calendula on the front fence. It’s all about defining the space.
I am pleased as well that a lot of my plants made it through the crazy cold snap we had here in February. Even my osteospermum, which is an annual, pulled through.

I turned all the dirt, planted the few seeds I had, and all that’s left is to get myself some seaweed fertilizer (I can’t stand the smell of fish, and I don’t need the neighbourhood cats and racoons being even more attracted to the space) and my little starter plants and I’ll be set to go for the year.

Aw! The little fence is so cute! I’m glad that some stuff survived the cold weather, now that I’ve got a plot, I’m still a little scared to plant anything. But we’re going to go start weeding it out this weekend, hopefully the forecast holds!
