Reminder to Self: Plant more bulbs!
I’ve just finished putting my Spring planting bulbs from Botanus in the ground (mostly hostas and some peonies) and the ones planted last fall are at now really hitting their stride. When I made my choices last Fall I picked most of my bulbs based on colours/shapes, choosing mostly tulips and generally more “dramatic” varieties in slightly unusual colours. What I didn’t really take into account was timing, and most of what I planted were “late Spring” varieties. While here on the West Coast that means lots of colour by the end of April, which isn’t half bad, it has also meant that I’ve spent weeks admiring the bounty of tulips and such in my neighbours yards waiting anxiously for mine to start showing their stuff. So this year, I think I’m going to try to add some earlier bloomers in there to max out this luxuriously long growing season we have here in Vancouver.

Are the muscari at top ‘Latifolium’? I did a short “plant of the month” piece for Budget Living magazine (and then they folded) about muscari as they are one of my favourite spring bulbs and I just love the unusual varieties. But seriously, who can really choose a favourite spring bulb?

Yup they are! And if forced to pick a (Spring) bulb favorite I’d be inclined to pick those. They were a freebie with my bulb order last Fall, and I totally forgot where I planted them so when they came up they were a bit of a surprise. But their intense colour, their early flowering (and staying power they’ve been happy out there for weeks now), and their kind of unassuming placement below my currant bush are all making them this years winner for sure. I catch these glimpses of them out the kitchen window and they make me unreasonably happy.
