the good, the bad, and the really ugly.
I began the season with high spirits, unfortunately, the ugly weather out here has put a cramp in my grand plans. My garden plot is a bog and has subsequently STILL not been planted. I don’t know how much longer I can hold out, but the rain just won’t let up! The patio garden (protected from the rain by our ridiculously large roof overhang) on the other hand, is doing fairly well!
The Good:
Miracle of miracles, my lavender is blooming!!! I guess it does flower after all, and it’s just lovely!

The nasturtiums are also blooming like crazy, and have been attracting tons of humming birds, which are much too quick for me to get a photo of, but are amazying to watch.

And figgy’s got some great leaves going…no sign of any little figs yet, but keep your fingers crossed!

The Bad:
I was just away for ten days for a wedding and road trip, and had to leave my plants in the hands of a friend…this friend is a gardener, so I wasn’t worried. The house plants are okay, though pretty over watered, but the chocolate mint must have gotten missed on the patio, because it was a dry shrivelled mess when I got back. I watered it promptly, and I think enough has come back to life that it will pull through. Here is a before and after of the damage:

And finally, for the really ugly… I had to rip my dill out right before leaving for my little trip, since an aphid problem had gone unnoticed, and was completely out of hand. It was just too much to manage, and was starting to spread to other plants, so for the greater good, the dill had to go. There was also some kind of worm on the stem, which was equally concerning. I love dill, so it was heartwrenching to pull it out, but it really had to be done.
Sorry for the horrible lighting, these were taken in the evening, but can you see the critters?

Here’s hoping that the weather turns soon so I can get out in the plot and get some things growing!
Till then,
midge.
