Have any of you ever received Breck’s catalog? For those of you who have never heard of them, they sell bulbs from Holland. I don’t know why I got their catalog in the mail. I’m sure someone sold my name to them--jerks. Anyway, back in August their catalog was in my mailbox.

I should have never looked at it. They just sucked me in. Look at all the different kinds of tulips! What great prices! Why, on the back cover there was a special deal just for me! Breck’s promised me that for $24.95 these bulbs were guaranteed to grow in my San Antonio garden. How could I pass up an offer like that? Plus if I ordered before September 11th, I would get some bonus tulips for FREE. Sounds good to me. But Wait! If I ordered over $60 worth of bulbs, I would get even some more bonus tulips. Now they’re getting too pushy. I didn’t fall for that trap. I do have some willpower. Did I mention that I really don’t have a garden? But then I saw a picture of a house with a tulips in the yard and I thought, "That’s what I want my yard to look like, dammit!". I could almost hear myself singing, "The hills are alive with the scent of tulips!". Do tulips even smell? It dawned on me later that I don’t live in the Texas Hill Country anyway.

I WENT CRAZY. Here’s what I ordered:

  • 20 Alpine Rosy Bells (Allium oreophilum)
  • 10 Economy Tulip mixture
  • 8 Giant Daffodils for Naturalizing (whatever that means)
  • 10 Giant Crocus for Naturalizing
  • 9 Hardy Glad Mix (Gladiolus nanus)
  • 20 Blue Grape Hyacinths (Muscari armeniacum)
  • 10 King Edward Tulips
  • 14 Grecian Windflowers (Anemone blanda)
  • 10 Rembrandt Tulip mixture
  • 20 Lavender Mountain Lilly (Ixiolirion pallasii)
  • 10 Early Stardrift (Puschkinia libanotica)
  • 12 Tall Dutch Iris Mixture
  • 3 Yellow Trumpet Daffodil (bonus bulbs)
  • 10 Purple Crocus (bonus bulbs)

I ordered 166 bulbs for a garden I do not have. I have no flower beds at all.

My order took forever to ship. It finally arrived the week before Halloween. I promised to give some to my friend for her birthday, which was in.....July. I promised some to Gwen because I knew she would be thrilled to have them.

I planted some bulbs in some pots, but I still have a lot left to plant, along with my freesia bulbs from last year. I would just plant some in the yard, but I don’t trust my husband to mow around them. Some of the bulbs I planted are already coming up. I think it may be crocus. Of course, I forgot to mark what it was.

Oh, and Breck’s had the nerve to send their summer catalog with my order. Must. Be. Strong.
