 | | My God, it’s hot out! We’ve hit 100 two days in a row and there seems to be no end in sight. There isn’t a cloud in the sky and it has not rained here in over a month. (If y’all read my bio, you would have remembered that I complain daily about the weather from May to October. Just a reminder). It’s too frigging hot to go outside and water any of my plants. The really need to be watered every day, but so far I haven’t been able to bring myself to do that. When I notice that my purslanes (which are very heat tolerant) are wilting, then I know it’s time to water. The weather hasn’t changed in so many weeks that I don’t even watch the Weather Channel anymore. And I love the Weather Channel! Where’s a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico when you need one? Therefore, I feel inspired to belt out this little ditty...
It ain’t gonna rain no more, no more
It ain’t gonna rain no more
How in the heck can I wash my neck
If it ain’t gonna rain no more?
However, according to SAWS, I must be watering my plants 24/7 because they told us in our bill that we used 8,229 more gallons of water than our neighborhood average. AND we used more than we did at this time last year. Well SAWS, we have a sprinkler system (which unfortunately doesn’t hit any of my pots), not every house does, and at this time last year we were banned from using said system, so shut up. Now if my husband would just turn in the toilet that’s been sitting in our garage since October, we’d get a $75 credit on our water bill. I swear, one of these days a weed is going to pop out of that bowl.
Surprisingly, my ficus is doing very well in this weather. I’m not a diligent in its care as I am in the winter. Maybe it’s because I rooted a branch off of it and now I have a back up tree just in case it croaks. All those seeds I planted in the spring have vanished. I am telling you right now that I will never plant from seed again. All the packs that said "easy to grow" haven’t.. Well, they might have, but since I am constantly transplanting stuff, I’m sure I killed them.
Now I’m wishing I went to visit my parents in Orange County in Southern California this summer. We’ll probably go home during Thanksgiving and my husband told me that UC Irvine just opened their arboretum to the public for the first time and he seemed really excited to take me there. I know that’s just a cover because that will give him an excuse to go to the bookstore to buy some more alumni sweatshirts and t-shirts. I’ll probably get some too even though I’m not an alumni like he is. Anyway, they have a 2500 sq. ft building. with more than 5,000 bulbs, so I'm looking forward to seeing it.
If they have more than 5,000 bulbs, then I bet they got the Breck’s catalog too.
