Frozen Red Tip

April 27, 2001.

Last weekend my friend and I, along with my two kids and her son, went to Herbfest! and the Wildseed Farm in Fredericksburg. Fredericksburg is this cool little town about 45 minutes or so northwest of San Antonio. However, the route I took made it a longer trip because I am lame and cannot read a map. A way too long stay at Dairy Queen didn’t help. ( PSA--Never, ever, order food at DQ. You will lose 10 years of your life. Just order the Peanut Buster Parfait and you’ll be on your merry way in no time. Thank you.) Now I’ve been to Fredericksburg many times and know how to get there without a map, but for some reason I thought it would be quicker to take I10 to Hwy 290 instead of going up 87 (which is the way one should go). Don’t ask me why. Maybe spending an eternity at DQ had something to do with it. By the time I did get to the 290, I could have already been to F-burg. No, it was another 40 fricking miles still.

After many "Are we THERE yets" and "When are we gonna get THEREs", we finally arrived. First stop was Herbfest! It’s usually free to visit, but since it was Herbfest! we had to pay an admission. Now if we had come without the kids, the ole fest might have been interesting as they had mini classes on herbs. But since we arrived so late, we missed most of them. I’m sure the kids were bummed. They had some nice gardens, but strangely enough, none of them were of herbs. They were selling potted flowers and herbs, but the local nursery sold the same stuff for less. They had some couple singing and playing an electric piano that totally reminded me of Will Ferrell and Ana Gasteyer on SNL. I only hoped that the lady kept her day job and as soon as she started singing "Who let the dogs out" and doing the "who? who? who?" part with her piano, I knew that it was time to leave. Herbfest! became Yawnfest!

The wildseed farm was awesome. For starters, it’s free and it’s huge! Seeing it from the ground probably doesn’t do it justice and I would have loved to have seen it from the air. There were acres and acres of bluebonnets (the Texas state flower in case you were wondering), poppies, phlox, and some other flowers that I can’t recall (I’m telling you, it’s DQ’s fault). You could take pictures in the flowers. Kids among the poppiesI told my kids to go pose. My oldest refused. I guess he’s too cool to have his picture taken now. My youngest willingly stood in the flowers and boy did he work the camera. Look! Here’s a picture of him making a face! Wow! Another picture of him rolling his eyes to the back of his head with his fingers up his nose! Cool! A picture of him sticking out his tongue! I finally convinced the both of them to stand in the poppies. Let’s just say I now have pictures of them that will embarrass them when the bring home their girlfriends.

Suddenly, the familiar sound of "I’m hungry" (which in my kids’ case is every 5 minutes) was heard and we headed for the snack bar. They had beer. This place gets better by the minute. I settled down with a Shiner Blonde. Some lady was hawking her cd by yodeling country music. I wonder if anyone bought her cd or maybe they just sped home as fast as they could so they could download it from Napster. A quick stop in the gift shop and then we were out of there. You see, the NBA playoffs started this day and we had to rush home to watch the Spurs beat the Timberwolves. But this time I took the short way home.
