Frozen Red Tip

January 8, 2001.

Well, now that the holidays are over, thus endeth my indoor blooms.. I bought plenty of them in December, but now the blooming is history. The sad thing is that I bought most of my plants at the grocery store. I swear, lately I haven’t been able to get out of one without buying some sort of plant. And I know I’m paying way more than I should. I’ll tell my husband that I’m going to the store for the usual staples like bread, milk, and Diet Coke. I guess the usual for me means a plant too. So far he hasn’t noticed.

In the month of December, I managed to pick up a Kalanchoe (had very good luck with it, but now it’s done blooming), 2 Christmas Cacti (I had one flower bloom on one plant. All the other blooms fell off or were knocked off by future NBA or NFL player that is my son), a begonia, now deceased RIP. Actually, I take that back. It died rather quickly, so I hope it’s having a miserable time in begonia hell. I also bought 2 poinsettias, 1 red and 1 yellow, but it’s now on it’s last legs (be sure to check out Gayla’s article on how to save your poinsettias), some hyacinths that smelled wonderful, and just some plain old regular plants. I have no idea what they are as the stick thingy just says ‘tropical’ or 'succulent'. Gee, thanks a lot. Like that’s going to help me. All in all, I think I bought at least 10-12 plants.

Instead of buying plants, I really need to buy some big pots. I’m just too lazy to do that right now. I also need to buy some potting soil (see my excuse about the pots). I’ve been stealing soil from one of my big ‘tropical’ plants to use for the little ones instead. (Psst...Luchina. Rainbow Gardens sells huge bags of soil for $2.99). I should follow my own tip.

I’m sure y’all are just dying to know how my ficus has been doing. We’ve had several freezes and I’m happy to report that my baby is surviving just fine. I wrap her up in sheets and if we have freezing rain, I will wrap her in plastic. That’s not easy to do. I’ve already knocked the tree over once by tugging on the plastic (good thing I wasn’t under it or I might just be hanging out with my begonia right now) and I’ve had the same sheets on my bed forever (washed, of course).

Anyway, I vow to have a cool garden this year. I picked up "The New Gardener--The Practical Guide to Gardening Basics" by Pippa Greenwood. (Pippa??! It was written by the girl that was on the Facts of Life? You know, the episodes that had Cloris Leachman instead of Mrs. Garret). I guess it's pretty much a gardening guide for dummies, only prettier. It was marked down from $25 to $10! so how could I resist? I might even learn something if I get around to ever reading the damn thing.

And for the grand finale....I have pictures!
