My front yard smells like a barn
So I had a garage sale last week and with my garage sale money I went plant shopping. It's not like I needed to use that money to buy plants, but I did so because I didn't want to hear my husband bitch, "You spent how much on plants???" Some things are better left unknown.
I dragged my oldest, complaining son with me with the promise that he could pick out something to grow to my favorite nursery. I didn't see my favorite toothless lady there that day. Maybe she was in the break room doing shots and rolling her own cigarettes. Or it could just be that it was pretty crowded that day. I did see a lot of new people working there, though. One lady I got to know pretty well because I kept asking what the same plant was and she kept telling me it was a fushia. She also told me that they don't do well in our lovely weather. I replied, "Well, WTF are you selling them for then?" I really didn't, but I did think that.
I got myself a big ass cart. A double decker even! And man, did I fill that sucker up. For your viewing pleasure, I provided links so you can ooh and ahh at my selections. There was no planning in what I bought. I just grabbed stuff that looked pretty and that would most likely survive our lovely Texas summers.
I bought:
New Wonder (Scaevola aemula)
Chicken Gizzard (Iresine)
Skullcap (Scuttelaria suffrutescens)
Candytuft Snowflake (Iberis sempervirens)
Compact Jatropha (Jatropha integerrima 'compacta')
Celosia (jewel box)
Moss Rose and Purslane (Portulaca)
Salvia
Vinca
Dusty miller (silver dust)
Bougainvillea
Half of the crap I bought I never heard of before.
I also bought some black pansy and zinnia seeds. I just threw them down blindly in my flower beds. I know the zinnias will grow. I've tried growing the black pansies before and they never appeared so I don't know why I'm expecting them to sprout now.
My son picked out sunflower, broccoli and green bean seeds. We started sunflowers indoors because I know those effing squirrels will eat them. Squirrels suck. I have never grown any veggies before so I haven't planted them yet. Plus, I'm not sure where to plant them. Someone told me that broccoli doesn't like heat, so I may have to wait until I plant it. Anyone?
So like I said, I didn't plan what I was gonna buy. My neighbor asked me, "Did you plant the tall stuff in the back?" I was all, "I think so". My husband asked me, "Did you plant so the taller plants are in the back?" I was all, "Uh-huh." How did they remember this stuff because I sure didn't. And now I'm not so sure everything in the back grows tall. I like surprises.
After I planted everything, I mulched and mulched. I mulched everything under the sun. The mulch must have manure it because I now have the smelliest house on the street.
It's a good thing.
