Isle of Decay:Alcatraz
So on my most recent visit to San Francisco, I met up with my parents for my very oldest and bestest friend's (lisa) college graduation. YAY LISA! I'm 24 years old, and the last time I went on a family vacation was, well, quite a while ago... So needless to say this trip was quite different than the usual SF jaunt: no dancing in the basement of chinese resturants named after drunk poets, no walking around for hours and hours and hours looking at whatever you want, flitting here and there. No, there was a schedule, and no matter what occured the night before I had to meet my folks at their hotel at said time. Which was actually great, because I got to hang out with the 'rents and I had the chance to do all the 'touristy' things that in trips past I was too snotty to do. Let me say this, they are tourist attractions for a reason. First Destination: Alcatraz. My father had been waiting to see the 'Rock' for thirty years, so after taking the obligatory picture of us standing in front of the ferry, we boarded. I was struck by how beautiful San Francisco was from afar.
As we approached Alcatraz I noticed the abundance of wild growth on the island.
The National Park service told us that after the prison closed they just let
everything, the flora and the fauna, do as they may. It was basically a giant, unmaintained, overgrown lawn with lots of obese pigeons. Pretty neat.
Without furthur sounding like I work for the San Francisco tourism board, I will end my description of Alcatraz with this final experience: There were literally hundreds of different types of wildflowers all over the island. I think that a book cataloging the wildflowers of the island is in order...
