June 15, 2001.

I have been spending an hour or so in the garden every morning, which has been an absolute luxury. It has been getting warmer so the vegetables are all flourishing. I already have cucumbers, beans, eggplants and a few early tomatoes. I only lost one tomato plant to root rot, the Omar's Lebanese. I think it was getting too much water and not enough sun and warmth. It is really unfortunate to have lost that one because it was suppose to produce enormous fruit and Ula is partial to large tomatoes. I have also been putting in some perennial plants to fill the empty space in her garden. Yesterday I planted an Echium, which will get huge up to 6 feet perhaps larger, also a Verbena, and two salvias. They are all drought tolerant once established, so I wont have to bother Ula with watering. She is getting so that she can't get out and work anymore, so plants like that will be well suited for her.

ArtichokesI am actually really proud of how the garden has come along. It is so gratifying to have everything growing well and looking nice. The artichokes are getting ready to flower. They weren't very large this year, since the plants are only 2 years old, so we decided just to let them flower, rather than eat them. The artichoke flower is really funky, it kind of resembles a big purple koosh ball stuck on a plant.

Dog StatueJB brought home a gazing ball to add to our collection of um..."ornaments". It is getting pretty crowded but I think I can fit it in. He was using it as a photo prop. I seem to have an up and coming garden prop house. I am including some much better photos that he took of the garden. I really stink at photography, so I am thankful that he took these for me.

Other things new since my last post: I took a trip to West Virginia to visit my parents. It was really beautiful there, lush green growth and clear air (except for the high pollen count that left me hacking every morning). I am always shocked by how green it is there after living in California for 5 years. I bought some plants for my Dad's garden, it was fun to go to their nursery and see an entirely new selection of plants. At the same time, because I am not used to their climate, it was difficult to choose appropriate plants. I chose mostly strange looking ones, Persicaria (red dragon), a Stellar Geranium (Vancouver Centennial), Tradescantia (concord Grape), and Thumbelina Oregano, which is chartreuse green. We spent one day wandering around my Dad's vineyard, which was really lovely. When I was younger they made each of us a flower bed and we would go to the farmers market and pick out plants to put in it. I always had to have snap dragons for some reason. It was a great lesson for us, we learned how to grow and care for plants. My parents rule!

A beautiful photo collage of my garden.
