Farmer's Almanac Weather Prediction for Ontario: "Fair initially, then showers spread in from the west."
Two new plants have recently found their way into my world. While shopping at an Unnamed American Department Store that I'll call USA-Mart, I grabbed them on an impulse. Davin was waiting in line to make our purchases. I have a habit of leaving him in the aisle while I run off to look at some last minute thing because I have no patience for waiting in line. Our line was conveniently located next to the plant department so I had to run in for a quick peak. Now, I've stated in the past that I won't buy plants from USA-Mart. As an aside, if I wasn't a big hypocrite lured in by cheap prices, I wouldn't be buying anything there. However, while I can live with the guilt of purchasing cheap blank tapes, I just don't trust them to properly care for their plants. It seems to me that they just shoot water on all of them and call it a day. Sometimes when I'm in that section I'm shocked at what they're trying to sell off at full price.
However, I have been known to relent on at least one occasion. If you're there at the right time, when the plants have just come in and before they've had an opportunity to do any damage, you can get a good deal on a decent plant. I purchased some cacti and succulents some time ago and they are still alive and kicking. When I popped in the other day the selection was good. I couldn't hold back. They had what looked to be a new shipment of gorgeous cacti and succulents. I was shocked because they weren't the usual sad mini cacti with the hot-glued strawflower on top. These were interesting plants of various shapes and sizes.
I purchased two succulents that are yet to be identified. One is definitely an aloe and the other could be a haworthia (I like to call them the Nathaniel Hawthorn plant as a name memory exercise) or an aloe. The aloe has long, thin, green leaves with white stripes that are lined with small teeth along the edges. At the base on on the new growth the leaves have a reddish hue. Now, how could I possibly pass on such a gorgeous plant for only $2.96 CDN?
The second plant is ferocious looking. It is green with white lines and bumps on the surface. The leaves are shorter and wider, growing upwards forming a rosette the whole way up (rather than a rosette from the base). The plant is covered in vicious teeth. Within a small 2" pot there are two main plants and four smaller pups. It really needs repotting. I am dying to know what plant it is. I did alot of searching with no luck. Thankfully I ordered a book about succulents that should be coming next week. Hopefully it will contain the information I need. If not, there's always the part 2 in the series. After that I don't know what I'll do.
As I am writing this I am looking over at my plants and I just can't see how I could possibly squeeze in another plant. Yet I am simultaneously thinking that I would like to check out the plant section again tonight when I go back to return an item. Some people have crack cocaine, I have plants. "Just one more can't hurt right? It's only three dollars a plant. I can't pass up a deal like that. I'll give some away. After this I'll quit, I swear."
This time last year: Shameful acts such as garbage picking and home and garden neglect are revealed.
