Yesterday, in my eagerness to get the growing started, I planted two varieties of Basil on my deck. Well today it is so cold I am wondering if it will make it through the night. I brought in the smaller pots, but the tubs will just have to make it on their own. I knew it was wrong when I planted too early, and now I might lose all that Basil. Learn from my mistakes. I'll let you know how it turns out.
On a good note the first Iris of the year was in full bloom today. Yesterday it was a bud and today it's a large flower. My mother-in-law sent them to me last year but it was too late in the season so they didn't bloom. This year they look amazing. They all have buds so soon there will be lots of flowers. Here's some pictures of them. Thanks go out to Sue for the Irises. Can anyone identify the variety? Email me if you know it.

Last night there was a huge storm in Southern Ontario. The sky was electric and the winds were nasty. Yet when I went out on the deck this morning everything looked fine. Really, really wet, but alive. I'm not complaining.
It's still a bit early to be planting in this region but I'm doing it anyway. I'm not condoning it, I'm just saying I did it. Today I planted Sweet Basil (Ocimum basilicum), Purple Ruffles Basil (Ocimum basilicum), Lime Mint (mentha x piperita citrata) and English Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)in pots on my deck. I'm a little disappointed by the Lime Mint. It smells like lime, but it doesn't really taste like it.
To commemorate my first journal entry and the work I put into designing this thing, I went out and took some photos of my garden and deck plants. Take a look.
