Farmer's Almanac Weather Prediction for Ontario: "Turning cold and dry"

For the first time I can safely say that the Farmer's Almanac is dead wrong. Yes it is cold. But dry? We had a blizzard yesterday and today there's snow everywhere. That's the opposite of dry. Basically the forecast for the entire month is wet. Spring wet I can handle. Winter wet is a big ole drag.

On Sunday night I got the new site design up and working. A day ahead of schedule even. Okay it was actually months behind my original schedule, but once I set a due date I stuck to it like glue. That's all I have to say about that. It's up, it's done. Next.

Beside my deskOn Sunday afternoon I made a little plant arrangement next to my desk. I didn't like how the top shelf was working out so during a four hour "Trading Spaces" marathon on TLC, I made some changes. Even though I don't sit next to the window, I've got plants next to me. They don't need direct or bright light so they're okay. To commemorate the occasion I started my orange hyacinth bulb (Gypsy Queen (Hyacinth orientalis) that's been sitting in the fridge for months, waiting to be used. I have it sitting in the crocus vase that I bought months ago at the Fall Fair for 5 bucks. It already has roots forming and a tiny bit of growth on top. I'm excited to see the flowers. Orange is my favourite colour.

I have started fertilizing my house plants more regularly in preparation for spring and new growth. I save the dirty aquarium water when I make water changes and use that for fertilization. I also use worm castings. Some of them were starting to produce new leaves and stems, especially the poor epiphyllum that I garbage picked way back when. It's been growing like crazy, and has several large stems already.

Canada Blooms is this month! I really look forward to this event every year. I love it so much that I've made a habit of going for two days every year. Somehow I manage to get as much of a kick out of it the second time around, and I always end up buying just as much crap too. I already have a mental list of what I want to buy. Going to Canada Blooms is the true mark of spring for me. As soon as you walk into the building the smell of flowers and soil is overwhelming. I have to admit that there is a lot of cheesiness, quaintness and over-consumption involved in the whole ordeal. However there's enough interesting and fascinating stuff to keep me mesmorized. Last year Beate and I tried to go to one of the presentations. It was supposed to be about the history of the lawn. We had visions of a presentation following some of the crazy lawn trends of 1950's suburban America. We had high expectations. It turned out to be SO DULL. The focus was on gardens of the affluent of Victorian Era Toronto. We lasted a total of 10 minutes before we couldn't take it anymore and left.

For Christmas I got a book called "The American Lawn" and that book is EVERYTHING and MORE that I had expected the presentation to be. If you're interested in reading a thorough and fascinating examination of The Lawn, then go out an get this book. I can't recommend it enough.
