Herb Fair 2003
Sunday I attended the Herb Fair at Harbourfront. Here's what I got:
Lemon Verbena -- Finally! Not an easy herb to find in the city, probably because it's a tender perennial not meant for this zone. It is however the tastiest of the lemon-flavoured herbs and has the most delicious smelling flowers.
Aztec Sweet Herb (Lippia dulcis) -- Here's one I've never had before. Incredibly sweet tasting. Similar to stevia but with more of an herby flavour that I think is better than stevia personally.
Apple Scented Geranium -- I'm no geranium fan. In fact I pretty much despise those boring annuals with the over-the-top showy red or pink flowers everyone and their grandmother sticks in the ground every spring here in Ontario. I did develop an appreciatiation for them when I saw them growing like huge, wild vines in the milder San Francisco climate. But here they just don't do it for me. But apple geranium has nice, small, fuzzy leaves, a trailing growth and tiny white flowers. Plus the apple smell is yummy.
Caraway Thyme -- Nice trailing thyme with pinky flowers and it truly does taste and smell exactly like caraway seeds. A friend said it reminded her of rye bread.
Geranium (possibly rose) -- Lost the tag on this one but it smells like a cross between citronella and roses.
Scented Geranium Attar of Roses -- Ya for a geranium hater I went a little nutso on the scented geraniums. Nice small flowers on this one and I do appreciate the rose smell.
Showy Calamint Grandiflora -- Looked like it was going to be a big busy perennial. Nice smell and the flowers are like tiny foxgloves. I couldn't resist.
Vietnamese Coriander (Polygonium sp.) -- aka Rau Ram. Grew this last year. Tender perennial. I like the leaves which have a nice burgundy red splotch on each one.
Banana Mint -- I didn't mean to buy this one. I was holding it to show Davin but had so many plants in my hands I forgot about it. Managed to pay for it and walk around before I realised I was now an owner. Boring looking plant but it does taste like bananas and mint. The taste is definitely stronger than the smell.
Mrs. Burns Lemon Basil -- a good lemony basil. Supposedly the best.
Sacred Basil -- I don't eat this as the leaves are fuzzy and tough and the taste is sickeningly sweet. But the flowers are lovely and attract lots of bees and beneficials. Again the smell is very sweet and strong.
Here's what I bought at last year's Herb Fair.
