More on My New Plot
My other small plot
Today we had garden clean up at the Beer Garden. I haven't mentioned yet that the garden is called The Parkdale Community Beer Garden because it's behind The Beer Store. I should say as an aside to Americans who read this blog that in Ontario beer is sold in special outlets run by the government called "The Beer Store". No "ABC Liquor" or "Liquor Supermarket" here. At the end of the day my fellow gardeners brought out a case of beer. Which I imagine will happen fairly regularly seeing as The Beer Store is conveniently located literally a few steps away.
Anyways today we had our big clean up. It was a damned mess. I'm very tired now from bending and picking up pieces of cigarette package parts (the yellow seal thingy, the foil, the filters, the actual packages), broken glass from beer bottles, and millions of beer and liquor store bags. One drawback to being located behind The Beer Store is the amount of beer and cigarette rubbish that accumulates back there. We cleaned from 10:30 am to 2:00 pm. And that's a group of people mind you.
Well now it looks great. Next I have to do up my garden. Davin and I did a quick clean up and a bit of digging to remove some rocks. There were a lot of rocks and glass in there. My next step is to get some wood and raise it up. It actually is raised and fresh topsoil was put in some time ago, but there are no sides so everything kind of erodes into the pathway.
I'm starting to get an idea of the lighting situation and I think my smaller patch (seen above) may be located in a semi-shaded spot. This is going to present a bit of a dilemma as to what should be grown there. I really want to stick to edibles but that maybe a problem. I'm a bit stumped right now. We have lots of communal space available for flowers and perennials so I'm in no real need to grow that. Anyone have any suggestions?
My little plot is sharing space with a communal herb garden. There isn't much in there now so I'm excited to get my hands on it and add a few things. Some of the other plots look great already but mine are completely clean slates. Okay my big plot (I'm using the word 'big' very liberally here) has the garlic and my little plot has two unidentified bulb plants, but generally they are just dirt. Some of the other plots are just perennials or herbs and raspberries so they already look like gardens. Today we had sunshine, lots of little birds, buds on the trees and daffodils coming up. It finally felt like spring.
