My Little Garden

A before shot of my garden
My plot of earth. Before.

Show above is my little patch of earth. Yesterday when I was walking home from the Farmer's Market (my new Thursday afternoon ritual), I saw that one of my fellow community garden peers was inside doing a bit of pre-clean-up day clean-up. I don't have a key yet so I took the opportunity to go over and see things now that the snow is cleared. It's lovely. Already lots of bulbs and perennials are coming up, buds are on the tree and bushes... greenery is all around. Hard to believe that just a few weeks ago it was completely hidden underneath snow and ice.

My little patch (which needs a name I think) has onions or garlic (should have looked closer) growing in it. Already I'm reaping the benefits of my garden! The person who used to occupy that space planted everything and then left it, so everything is still there from last year including what I would bet are lots of tomato seeds that will start sprouting everywhere. On my visit I reached down and crumbled a handful of dirt between my fingers. It's nice soil, nicer than the soil in my downstairs garden (which I do not grow edibles in). I think when they started the garden they put a few layers of top soil in. I'm not sure if much amending will be necessary but of course I plan to mulch and such. Does anyone know where I can get straw in downtown Toronto? Is this possible? Is there anywhere at all in Toronto where I can buy straw?

The other good news is I was told that I could have another small patch of unclaimed garden if I want it. I definitely want it! Needless to say I am very excited and can't wait to get in there and start planting things. I'm really looking forward to nice weather now more than ever.
