Spring is Started?
Crocus
The growing season is supposedly started but I'm having a hard time getting into it with this crazy back and forth swinging weather. One day warm and sunny, the next day cold and grey. Sigh. I did manage to squeeze some outdoor deck cleaning, garden cleaning, and potting table put together-ing on the days that were warm and sunny. I also remembered that I had some cheap sale bulbs sitting in the fridge that couldn't be planted in the fall. I bought them on super sale when it was much too late and the ground was long frozen. So at the time I just threw them in the fridge. I don't suggest it, but I am experimenting to see what will happen now that I've planted them completely off-season. It is possible that they *might* flower since they had been refridgerated for the required length of time and most of them had buds and roots forming. Or they'll produce leaves and no flowers and then maybe flowers next spring. Who knows. They were something like a buck a pack which is cheap enough to muck around with.
We had our first community garden meeting last week. I got to meet the gang who I'll be sharing space with this year and I'm pretty excited about the whole thing. We'll be having a clean-up this coming Saturday which will give me an opportunity to go in there and actually see how much space I have available to me. I am yet to even see the garden without a deep layer of snow covering it!
Some time ago I thought I might have fungus gnats in my stevia so I put a piece of potato into the soil to check. Of course I completely forgot about the potato after some time. I didn't have fungus gnats but I did end up with a potato plant that is now growing along side my stevia! I didn't plan on growing potatoes this year but I don't have the heart to rip the plant out. Plus it's a fingerling which is a pretty good variety. Too bad I'm allergic to potatoes. I might just plant it out anyways into one of the large deck planters when it is warm enough.
In other news my seeds are all going great and have turned into seedlings. I need to get started on potting them up into bigger containers and starting basil and cucumber seeds. I have to say that heating mat I paid a small fortune for was worth the investment. My seedlings germinated very quickly. When the lid is on the dome it creates a nice little incubator for the seeds to germinate in. Cozy.
