Six Little Lithops

lithops living stone
Living Stone (Lithops)

Saturday morning I discovered a post in the forums indicating that one of the corner stores I frequent (for plants) at Queen and John had shipment of lithops in stock. I know I said impulse buys were out for 2003, but Saturday evening I took a taxi to that corner store with my cooler bag in tow and purchased six of them. I reasoned that they're very tiny and don't take up much space or time so I could overindulge without too much in the way of regret later on. The woman at the counter commented that I "...have a lot of friends." To which Davin thought to reply "Ya and they're all her." I should note that we were on the way to a restaurant for his birthday party and I dragged him out of our way in a snow storm to get the plants.

My long term plan is to pot them all in one container together but in thinking about it I realised that I should wait a bit to do this. I'm still not completely comfortable in my ability to successfully raise lithops, especially after my most recent incident. I think putting all my plants in one container could result in a big problem should I err in any way. Best to keep them separate for awhile and be sure I've got a proper handle on this.

This site has some great information on cultivating lithops.

new cactus

On Sunday afternoon I found myself purchasing more plants. I bought a new succulent (unidentified), and a new cactus for my desertarium (also unidentified). Then Monday afternoon I had to go back to the store to get something I forgot, and came back with 3 more small cacti for my desertarium. One is an opuntia that I didn't really want (I've got 4 different opuntia species now) but the cacti came together in a sealed pack of three so I had no choice. One of the plants is flowering -- real flowers, not those disgusting straw flowers they often hot glue to the tops of cacti.

That's ten new plants in three days. eek.
