Sharry Baby Takes a Bad Turn
Just when I think I'm out of the woods with one problem, another arises. Literally overnight the leaves of my oncidium orchid, 'Sharry Baby' turned yellow. Mind you the plant has had some black spotting on the foliage since the day I bought it. I bought it anyway. I'm a sucker. Black spotting is usually an indication of some sort of cultural problem, but even during the summer, under excellent conditions the spotting didn't go away. It didn't get worse and it didn't get better so I didn't worry about it. It certainly didn't prevent the plant from producing loads of lovely flowers.
Then a few days ago just like that, the leaves turned yellow. Not all the leaves, just a few.
My guess is it was too cold and possibly wasn't receiving enough sun in its location. So I moved it to the sunniest, warmest spot (which also has grow lights for sunless days), repotted it in fresh orchid medium and cut back the yellow growth. We'll see what happens. Unfortunately this new location receives far less humidity so I have to be sure to mist it regularly and keep the humidity tray fresh. I would really love for it to flower again, but right now I'll be happy to just bring it back to health.
