Fishy Fertilizer

I was watching an old episode of "The Nature of Things" during my lunch hour, about the important role salmon plays in nourishing B.C.'s coastal forests. Apparently it was found that as much as 55% of the nitrogen used by trees came from salmon. The reason being that once the salmon have completed spawning in the rivers, they die and their bodies are consummed by bears. The bears actually carry a great number of the salmon they consume into the forest rather than eating them on the shore. A portion of each carcass is left to decompose on the forest floor and in trees via maggots, bacteria, etc.

This alone is one good reason why B.C salmon populations need to be preserved. Interesting stuff. The Nature of Things is always filled with fascinating facts and information. Another reason why I love the documentary channel.
