Gayla's Guide to This Year's Tomato Harvest
In the past week I've been enjoying the bounty from my garden. Last weekend I harvested another round of herbs, hung them to dry, and packaged up the ones that were fully dry. I love the way the herbs look hanging from frame of the canopy. It's a nice reminder of my efforts. Once everything is packaged up and put away it's nearly forgotten. I like to show off.

The tomatoes have been ripening like mad. I've prepared a chart depicting the varieties that have ripened. You'll notice that Yellow Pear are present despite the fact that I supposedly didn't grow any. I don't know how it happened, but yes I did end up with a Yellow Pear plant. For a while now (since the fruit started developing) I had been questioning whether or not what I thought was a Black Plum, could in fact be a Yellow Pear. By the time it produced the first yellow fruit I couldn't deny it anymore. It is quite possible that I planted one seed and forgot about it. You might recall that there were several plants that I neglected to label which ended up as mystery plants. It was kind of fun waiting for the fruit to set and grow large enough to determine what each plant was going to produce.
Here is a breakdown of each type minus the Black Plum which haven't ripened yet:
Green Zebra - Love the colours. Such a pretty tomato. I also like the hardness of this tomato. Will definitely grow again.
Yellow Pear - Tasty as always. Super sweet!
Sunrise III - Super prolific determinate. Only drawback is that it can get a little mealy. Will grow again if I can get a hold of a plant. I don't think it is an open pollinated variety (but not sure as I can't find info on this one). I bought this plant in a styrofoam cup from a guy on the street (no kidding).
Purple Prince - Possibly my current favourite tomato. Absolutely delicious! Dark purplish flesh is gorgeous.
Yellow Boy - This one is a hybrid. Very tasty and firm. Low acid. Good on sandwiches. Prolific producer. Would grow again.
Tiger Tom - Absolutely gorgeous stripes but the taste was a bit disappointing. Would grow again just because it looks so good in a bowl.
Broad Ripple Yellow Currant - Tasty and tiny. So cute! Low acid flavour, a good small type that just pops in your mouth. Really juicy inside. The back story about the original plant being found in a sidewalk crack adds to the interest of it. I would grow this again.
Cherry Gold - The Yellow Currant now holds rank over this old stand-by. The cherry gold just wasn't as exciting this year. But since it is a nice compact determinate and the Yellow Currant is a mammoth indeterminate plant, I suppose I will grow it again.
Purple Tomatillo - I love these! They don't turn purple until they are ripe. These are so sweet and tasty I have eaten them right off the vine which I have never done with any other tomatillo. And the purple is really pretty (that being said by someone who generally doesn't like the colour purple!)
