Ewwww

Flies are attracted to my flowering apple mint! I really do not understand why, but at times I have found up to six flies hovering over the flowers or sitting on them. It's kind of odd because they aren't attracted to any other plant. I'm thinking of just cutting the flowers off because it's kind of disturbing. Does anyone have an explaination for this?

In other more pleasant news some of the sunrise III tomatoes are turning orangey-red. This is big excitment as they are the first ripe tomatoes of the year and I'm still not completely sure what colour they are going to be. The plant is a bit of a mystery because I bought the seedling from some guy on the street. Kind of a strange way to purchase a tomato plant but I couldn't resist. It is turning out to be my most successful determinate plant ever so I'm not complaining.

Scylla's Potatoes

Today is my deceased grandmother Scylla's birthday. I did this little Flashy thing a number of years ago (hence the suckiness) in memory of the potatoes she grew on her senior's apartment balcony. She was an unusual woman and I'm pretty sure my green thumb comes from her side of my genetic lineage. Here's what I wrote about her two years ago:

"A few of my traits that I can trace back to her are the plant growing fever and the ability to make something out of nothing. Even when she lived in an apartment building she grew potatoes on her balcony. Every Christmas she would place her plants together into a triangular shape and then decorate it with ornaments like a tree."
