GARLIC HARVEST

GAYLAs GARLIC
I pulled up my one garlic plant yesterday. Low and behold it had transformed underground into a full head of garlic! It's not huge, (I probably should have waited longer) but it's as big as the ones we get in our organic box.

Crops that grow underground always feel like some secret process because you don't get to watch the food grow. I stuck the garlic clove in the ground. In the spring some leaves shot up. Then it produced a crazy looking curly flower. Then the leaves withered. Then I pulled it up and there was a bulb! The magic of growing your own food. My friend and neighbour J commented on how silly it seems that we go to a store to pick and choose our food for the week without really knowing about how it comes into being.

Sure I've only grown one head of garlic, but it's times like these when I feel like a bit of a farmer. As if I'm going to feed the starving masses with my lonely garlic bulb. I don't even eat garlic right now, but plans are already in the works to plant more cloves in the fall. Because we can...
