Who's Panicking?!

How did I let planting the tomatoes slip through the cracks of time like I did? I was just checking over last year's journal entries to see where the tomatoes were at at this time last year and I found this entry that claims that I had tomatoes by July 19. Now the only ripe ones were the 'early girl' variety so that makes sense. But according to my entry I had fruit on some of the later-starting heirlooms as well! I'm starting to get very concerned that some of this year's plants just aren't going to make it in time. Sure I've got another nine days to catch up to the 2001 entry, and these tomato plants grow fast, but many of them (bar the ones I started much earlier) are nowhere near where they should be.

I knew this when I finished the planting last weekend, but I suppose I was in some sort of denial that everything would work out and be fine and now that the proof is in front of me I've hit panick mode. Imagine if I spent the entire summer watering and caring for all those plants and I ended up with very little fruit! My dreams of eating canned tomatoes well into the winter is quickly shattering.

See further evidence here.

I suppose there is nothing left to do but keep on keeping on and hope for the best. I know I will definitely get fruit off a few varieties, and some have tiny fruit forming already. But the green zebra, and tiger tom! I don't care much about the broad ripple yellow currant. I can live without that one. But what about the black plum!

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Okay wait. I just went back further and it looks like I was still planting some transplants up to June 26 last year. And we've had unseasonably warm whether this summer. I can almost see the tomatoes growing before my eyes, whereas last year they seemed much slower. Further investigation shows that the tomatillos may actually be ahead of schedule this year. So at least I know I'll have those for sure. What would I do without this journal to keep track of this stuff? I suppose maybe it would be a bit easier to live in denial. When you've got your hands in a pile of squishy dirt it's easy to convince yourself of just about anything.
