Seed Packets and DDT Dust

seedpack.jpg
One last thing before I stop beating a dead horse and going off again about my trip to the Garden City (why oh why does it have this name?), glorious St. Catharines, Ontario. Can you tell I don't get out much? A city that I grew up in and once made me sick to my stomach whenever I went back, is now a fun jaunt out of the city!

Okay so during out trip we hit the Flea Market. I was on a mission that wasn't plant related (*gasp*) but I did manage to come across a basket of old seed packets. It was the vendor's last day so he gave me the whole lot for 50 cents. I'm far too lazy to put up photos of all of them but here's one of squash. There are seeds in most of the packets but I'm guessing they aren't viable. I bought them for the designs anyways rather than the seeds.

Handling old seed packets kind of makes me nervous because I imagine them being stored next to cans of DDT and those crazy metal pump sprayers that white-gloved lady gardeners cheerfully demonstrate in old magazine ads. I imagine decades of residue penetrating my skin and creeping slowly through my system. *shudder* It doesn't stop me from handling the packets sans protective geer, but it does make me think.

In exciting news flowers are slowly popping up on my tomatillos. I can hardly wait for the first purple tomatillos to appear. When the first flower opens photos will appear here.

Yesterday I fertilized my tillandsia. I'm lucky we've had so much humidity because I have to admit that I haven't been spraying or dunking them nearly as much as I should. With so many plants outside right now, my attention has been drawn away from the indoor plants and sadly some of them are suffering. Let's just say I completely forgot the ivy even existed until I found it withered up and dead. I was explaining to a friend today that the less exciting and low-maintanence plants often suffer because so much energy is focussed on making sure the high maintenance ones do well. My priorities are all screwed up.
