Hinterland Who's Who

Yesterday afternoon I took a portion of the afternoon off to get outside into some sun. My brother and I ventured to High Park for some green plants and air. As I happily pranced from tree to tree taking photos of buds and flowers I was viciously attacked by a bird! Okay not vicious but it did freak me out a bit. There was a red-winged blackbird sitting in a bush that was coated in bright yellow flowers (not forcythia). I went over to take some photos and the bird flew off into a nearby tree and started shreiking wildly. Right away I figured the bird must have a nest in the bush because why else would it freak out like that.

Well the next thing I knew the bird had swooped down at me! Then a few seconds later it was back again. It repeated this behaviour, getting closer and closer to my head with each pass. A few times I could feel the bird pass over my head by mere inches. I took the shots and bolted out of there. I knew birds had varying methods of protecting their babies, but I never imagined a tiny little bird would ever have the gumption to attack me like that. I was just taking innocent photos of a flower. Man alive!

The Flower Photo in Question

In fact all of the wildlife in High Park are dangerously unintimidated by humans. Walking the park we had several animal encounters with swans, squirrels, chipmunks... even tiny little chick-a-dees who looked upon us as a possible meal ticket. Sitting on the patio of the cafe, several sparrows approached us in search of scraps and moved on when none were provided. I have a feeling most of the wildlife have developed an unhealthy taste for sugary chips, fries and wonder bread.
