Bugs, Bugs and More Bugs!

I'm not sure what horrible thing I did in my past to deserve such cruel bug karma, but for whatever reason it is, I'm so sorry.

As I was watering my plants today, I noticed that my cucumber plants and once-thriving marigolds are all covered in spider webs!

At first I thought they were webs of beneficial spiders who ate aphids and the like. But on closer inspection I soon discovered a spider mite metropolis!

I scanned every gardening book I had to learn how to get rid of these quick and destructive mites to no avail. All my books said they were nearly impossible to get rid of. Not even an army of ladybugs will save me from this mess.

So I waved the white flag, dug up all the spidey-infested marigolds and threw them out. I pruned the cucumber plant and hoped for the best.

Then I got the bright idea to mix some organic fish emulsion with water to fertilize my plants. The smell was nauseating as usual, but I figured I was suffering for a good cause.

As soon as I fertilized the plants, I noticed a swarm of yellowjackets that seemed to come out of nowhere. And they were headed straight for all my container plants. Why? Apparently, the fishy smell got them going in a hungered frenzy. Don't even get me started on how bizarre it was to see eight yellowjackets fight over a small bit of discarded hotdog. Creepy.
