In my continuing effort to not focus on my job, I have spent the better part of the last week goggling possible vacation destinations that I will more than likely NOT be visiting this year. Other than visiting Arkantos in India, my other current fantasy locations are:

-Brazil: though I’m a bit torn between Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.

-Jamaica, or Barbados, but then again, the other day I met the coolest girl form Trinidad…

- Majahuitas: This is my mainstay daydream holiday location. My friend used to date the owner. It’s even better than it looks- 20 minutes from Puerto Vallarta by private boat.

Generally, my requirements currently are fantastic food, sunshine and a large body of water.

Last summer my incessant fantasizing actually paid off in the form of a two-week trip around Scotland- I would go back in a minute (not to mention a certain beau I had to leave behind in Glasgow). I’m definitely itching to leave the states again regardless.

Work with me on this- if you were getting on a plane tomorrow morning, where would you be headed?

- Arkantos in Kolkata
- Gabon, on the west coast of Africa
- The British Isles and Scotland

No! Mexico is cheap. It depends on how you go of course.... I've never resort-holidayed for instance so I have no clue what prices are like in that regard.

But in my non-resort experiences you can eat WELL for like 10 bucks a day and I've stayed in really nice, small hotels for 30-40 bucks... which is on the high end since I know lots of people that have stayed for 5 bucks a night. Depends on what you're looking for. But 30-40 dollars gets you a nice hotel or bed and breakfast in all the places in Mexico I've been.

Here's an example of the food situation. On our first trip to Mexico we went to a small town on the pacific coast. One night we decided to "splash out" and ate in the chi-chi restaurant in town. We both had HUGE, crazy meals and I think it was 24 bucks U.S. total.

Germany - to catch up with a newly married friend I haven't seen since '98.
Russia - to catch up with a friend who just had her first baby.
Finland - Midsummer. Need I say more?
New Zealand - I want to catch me some Hobbitsses.

In actuality, I'll be hopping a plane to Maui in a month. Before you all get super jealous, let me say I'll be sharing a condo with my in-laws for 7 days, and my husband and I get the spare room with two twin beds.

Gayla,
Guess I should explain... I lived in Mexico, a long time ago, every morning walks on the beach, wild dogs and vultures, fishing boats. Shrimp tacos for breakfast (oh ya) I was in Loretto on the Baja, before it was developed into a resort destination.

The trip I was looking into was- boutique hotels near Cancun, a rental car to get to the pyramids without taking the bus, fine food, snorkling in Cozumel and so on..it was going to be $$$$. Resort holidays with airfare start at $1,500 each and that's low end.

I just got back from Cancun and Cozumel about two weeks ago. If you are going to do the resort thing, right, it's not cheap. I stayed at the JW Marriot-- pricey, but worth it. My boyfriend and I totally spurgled though. Sometimes when you go on vacation you have to plan on spending a lot of money and not worry about it. There were some thing we did to curb spending though-- for example we crammed into an econoline van taxi with 11 Mexicans for our trip from Cancun to the ferry for Cozumel... $3/person. Score!

Parasailing= $80
Swimming with dolphins= $200
Snorkeling= free (we found the best spots on our own, brought our own gear)
Mopeds= $25
Jungle tour= $80

Trip to remember= Priceless. Smile

The only ruins I saw totally sucked.

We didn't want to sit in a van to go three hours away to the really nice pyramids and ruins. We had every intention initially, to go see them, but once we got there we were like, "Culture smulture, lets go for a dip in the pool and belly up to the bar..."

Want to see pictures? Ofcourse you do. Razz http://photos.yahoo.com/butterfliesinstead ... the Cancun album.

Anyway. Back to the topic at hand... Briana-- go anywhere there is snorkeling. Australia!? That is my next destination. That and Hawaii.

Also, have you seen much of SouthEastAsia? Thailand? Singapore? Those are also musts on my list...

grrlindapit:

Ha, I work for Australians- so as much as I would LOVE to go, I try to avoid Aussies as much as possible.

Hawaii, though... that is truly tempting. Wanna come?

Where I'd hitch a ride to:
-Iceland (had plans to go actually!): Would hit up the geothermal spas and go hiking as well as play golf at 2AM (Just once, to say I did it!) in broad daylight. Plenty to see and do up there.
-England, Ireland, Scotland (Might move here after school with some friends)
-Hungary, Romania, Germany, Austria, etc...oh yeah, Ukraine and Russia
-Egypt
-Jordan
-Australia
-Back to Indonesia, would love to see Bali, Monado, and Java again. But would also like to check out Sumatra and Borneo(for the Orangutans) and Sulawesi (just cuz I didn't get to go there last time). Also wouldn't mind hitting up Anak Krakatoa (Baby Krakatoa...whats left of the original Krakatoa after its enormous eruption on August 26, 1883...haha, just realized thats 10 days off from being exactly 100 years from my birthday!)
-Tasmania
-Brazil
-Carribean

The list goes on! Anyone want to go? Laughing

katsmama: Is that a gang? Ha! The zocalo boys... they'll mess you up. Actually I didn't spend much time in the zocalo in Oaxaca City.

Never had any troubles in Mexico. Have never particularly enjoyed the army roaming on the beach, or in cities with pump action shot guns... and on a particularly grueling 14 hour bus trip army guys getting on the bus to check out the passengers... with pump action shot guns.... but other than that no problems.

If you're looking for archeology, pyramids etc the Valles Centrales (the area in and around Oaxaca City) is a hot bed. Lots of stuff.

I've got more pictures here from 2000. And since I put this together that long ago you can be guaranteed that "the coming soon" bits aren't coming anytime soon.
