I decided to try out germinating a mango seed as well and I too see what appears to be 'twins' sprouting!

I googled this and only found one site which may be an explanation.

http://www.manilatimes.net/national/2004/may/30/yehey/prov/20040530pro7.html

Could it just be the "double rootstock" they are talking about? That would be nice since they mention that the double rootstock variety fruits faster!

Wow! Well that would explain it...

My first mango only sprouted one plant, but every other one I've done so far (of the Philipine variety) have been "twins" and one is even a triplet.

Very interesting read! Thanks.

i have been neglecting this topic for a while. sorry.

now for the answers.

@meighan, yeah. there are many varieties of atkins as there are of khas. so its a high possibility that tommy atkin is the same variety as gulabkhas.

a dollar a piece?? good good! its at times like this, i thank the high heavens for being born in indyeah!

@brenn, have you been scarifying them. if so try some gibberallin GA5, and some auxin accelaration.

@meighan, whats a dragon fruit??

@brenn, your "oh-so-posh imported mangoes" are sold here on the curbside for 5 rupees a kg! hehe i get the last laugh!

@meighan, this phenomenon is known as duomeristematosis, english meaning "two stems", a common occurance. not a life threatening issue, but no doubt irritating. nip the bud as quick as possible. the bigger stem will gow to at least 8-9 feet before breaking up.

@taryn, the process of double rootstocking is one of grafting, a faster fruiting shoot is mated with two roots, one which is hardier but absorbs less, and one which is less hardy but absorbs in enormous quantities. i should say that this is an artificial process, while duomeristematosis is a natural one.

@meighan, triplets are rare, so may want to preserve that. but do cut off the "twins"

Ark!

I think I have you guys (well, besides Ark!) beat on mango prices....50 cents each! I bought two more of another variety and will try my luck again.

Meighan- have you transplanted any of your mango seedlings yet? I heard they are pretty difficult to keep alive if the tap root is bent. I'm not sure how to tell when to transplant and what size container would be best.

Oh, speaking of exotic fruits- have you had any experience growing cherimoya? I'm going to try this as well and you seem to have a knack with grocery store gardening!

taryn, do not even think of transplanting if the plant has less than 15-20 leaves. then find the biggest container around. a 200 litre blue plastic drum would be the bes, if you like it to be in a container. but i think that planting to the soil will let it mature faster.
if you decide to use a container, use a bit clayey soil, as mangoes require LOTS of water. a single unit drip irrigation system will be quite effective. and not to mention very cheap. get the biggest bottle you can find. then go to the drug store or the hospital and get a IV drip, without the needle. set it up to provide a drop every 5-7 seconds. you can add chemical nutrients to the water too. organic stuff will form algae in the pipe, do avoid them, and put them directly in the soil.

Aaah, another on my list to grow from the grocery store. Avocado, pineapple and now mango. Maybe dragonfruit if that's possible... I'll have to check the thread on that.

Mangos are so cute, I love the foliage. Ark, how big do you think they'll grow if they're kept indoors, about 20 degrees? Would they actually mature and produce fruit?

Dragon fruits are super easy to grow! Mine are already getting little cactus spikey things. Very cool.

tiger, you have to keep in mind that the mango plant is essentially a tropical creature. of course there are cold hardy varieties, but they generally give less quantity of fruit or mature very slowly.

if you have a standard variety of mango, i dont think it would not do very well indoors. 20 degrees is very cold for these plants. 35 is comfortable for them. they may mature, but i think your grandchildren may be able to enjoy the succulent fruits.

as for size, i dunno, but i know that size and quantity of fruit has a direct relation - the bigger the plant, the more number of fruits it gives.

hope i dont sound pessimistic, but sometimes facts are hard.

Meighan, they're doing amazingly! I can't wait to try this out myself.

Good to see your mango is doing well, I've got 1 that's a metre tall. I found an mp3 of jungle sounds that kind of fits the environment in my apartment.

BTW I've 3 different mango trees a Brazilian, a Philippine and a green. Does anyone know how to tell the difference, I forgot which is which. I think I mixed up the labels on the pots. Sad

space, in order to identify plants, they need to be photographed in ambient light. the whole plants needs to be uniformly covered in light.

this is a good example to follow.

I didn't mean that it needed identification. I meant that I, too, started a mango from seed. Capisce?

No worries, Ark. I am constantly being confused w/ Dapi. I'm flattered, really. Very Happy It has been about two months since I planted the seed, and yes, I keep it in a low light situation, mostly because I live in the desert, and I'm busy enough that it would be difficult for me to keep up with watering it if it were in full sun. Lucky for me the plant doesn't seem to mind!
