While it would have been more exciting to see a Jack-in-the-pulpit patch (my favourite woodland flower), finding a few Yellow Lady's Slippers (Cypripedium calceolus) growing in the back lot behind the cottage was a pretty big thrill. It isn't everyday that I find orchids growing wild. And it actually took me a full day to notice them. I thought I had scanned the lot pretty thoroughly; at times crawling around examining the ground and finding the tiniest of flowers. I was practically jumping up and down when I did finally start spotting the stripped foliage popping up here and there on my second day at the cottage. Proving once again that even keen eyes can overlook a lot. |
