I agonized for a long time over the identification of this plant. At the time of the picture, I took it for granted that it was False Solomon's Seal (Smilacina racemosa). However, when I looked it up in my field guide, it looked alot like the photo of Canada Mayflower (Maianthemum canadense). Eventually I read the identifying marks at the back of the book and determined that it is indeed False Solomon's Seal (Smilacina racemosa). Canada Mayflower is distinguished by it's unusual lack of petals (it has 2 petals, 2 sepals and 4 stamens). Regardless, both plants are members of the Lily Family, and indigenous to the woodlands of this region. I have now learned to look more closely at a plant's identifying marks before making assumptions based on general appearances. |
