You Grow Girl™

Lake Huron Shoreline

Even in late May many of the woodland ferns were still in the process of unfurling their leaves; and they were plentiful. I'm not 100% positive, but I think this is a bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum). The fiddleheads of this fern are not edible--in fact they are cargenogenic so do not eat them if you see them growing wild.

This particular species has very few, yet very large leaves on each plant. They kind of look like the curled up fists of a Guiness Book longest fingernails in the world record holder.

Learn how to harvest the edible fiddleheads of the ostrich fern* (Matteucia struthiopteris).
*Not to be confused with the inedible fern depicted in this photo.
