The Autobiography of My Mother
by Jamaica Kincaid
©1996 Farrar Straus & Giroux.

This book is about a hard woman born to a hard life. Xuela, the main character, is neither likable nor admirable, but her story is compelling. And she pays attention to plants. This book is full of raw physicality and the character's awareness of vegetation contributes to the visceral sense of place the reader experiences. Many have been offended by the violence and cruelty in this book, but the story is haunting. For those who like to have the feeling of a place wrapped around them long after the reading is finished, this book is recommended. -EF
