The vibrant red part of the red ginger or ostrich plume (Alpinia pururata) plant is actually a series of bracts that house the true flower, which is white and unseen in this photo. I spotted this plant growing at the same truck stop on the Pacific Coast as the plumeria.

Although it has a similar smell, this isn't the same type of ginger that is grown commercially for use in cooking. The red ginger is popular in flower arrangements and is native to Polynesia but grows well in the hot climate along Oaxaca's coast.
