I'm not sure why, but I was shocked the first time I saw a cactus plant with a name carved into its flesh. Now it makes perfect sense to me that people would carve into a cactus. Some of them are as big and as old as trees. When we were travelling through the mountains, what I thought were large trees growing in the distance were actually large cacti. As the cactus grows, the name carving will grow and stretch with it in the same way that a name in a tree becomes a part of the surface of the tree.

Why "Eduardo" would want to carve into this tiny little agave is beyond me. It will never grow much larger than it already is (a few inches tall), and the leaves will never grow or expand, distorting the name carved on it. The only reason why I even noticed it was because I had just climbed to the top of a pyramid and I was staying low to the ground to avoid passing out from my fear of heights. We were on top of a pyramid, that was on top of a mountain. The air was thinner than I'm used to and the heat was intense. Focussing on the ground was easier than looking down on the earth far below.
