The first time I saw cotton growing was on this very beach on Oaxaca's Pacific Coast, just over a year prior to this trip. It might have been this exact plant in fact. It absolutely blew my mind. Here is a plant that we use everyday, yet know so little about.

The first thing that went through my mind when I saw it was "This is cotton? This is it?". After examining it thoroughly, I was fascinated to discover that the puff of cotton fibres surround the seeds. Even though I've seen this countless times before, in so many different plants, I had never made the connection with cotton. I think that in all my studies of the history surrounding the plant, I'd forgotten that physiologically it's just a plant.

Take a look at an excellent presentation about cotton and cotton production from an organic standpoint.
