And the Winner Is….

….‘Beaver Lodge Slicer’. Although I can’t be absolutely certain since I discovered some ripe ‘Green Grape’ tomatoes hidden beneath their foliage later that evening. We ate those straight-away before I could be bothered to get out a camera. The ‘Beaver Lodge Slicers’ were delicious on a fried egg sandwich with basil. I don’t have anything special to say about the flavour. They were your “average” incredibly delicious, homegrown red tomato.

I’m waiting for the ‘Black Brandywine’ to ripen. Those are going to be killer, I just know it.

Update: The ‘Black Brandywine’ were very prolific and did well in an extra large container, but the flavour was not very exciting.

Waiting for Potatoes

A lot of exciting things have been happening in the gardens these days. With summer fully underway I have been harvesting all sorts of goodies. There are new discoveries everyday. Yet none have garnered quite the reaction as when I stuck my right arm into the soil, moved it around a bit and pulled out a bright blue potato!

Most edible plants provide a regular account of what’s to come. I can see the tomatoes and peppers mature and develop flowers that turn into teeny tiny fruit and eventually ripen into ready-to-devour goods. Potatoes on the other hand are a leap of faith. As a gardener I am forced to watch and wait impatiently as those tiny pieces stuck under soil in the spring turn into healthy plants and eventually produce flowers. But you really can’t know for certain that there is more then a bunch of thin roots underneath the soil until the time comes to dig them out.

Maybe I should have waited. Maybe I should have had the patience to hold onto my anticipation until the moment came to dig them all out. But the excitement isn’t lessened by having seen one. In fact now that I know they really are there I am actually even more excited and can’t wait for the real harvest.

I have never loved potatoes like the ones I grew myself. They’re the best.

Grazings

This post (I kind of hate that word to describe writing here) is going to be piecemeal, a quality that is indicative of my life right now as I float or rather scramble from one task to another in an attempt to keep up with the season and my workload. I’ve been trying to write something cohesive here for over a week now. “Just focus and write on one topic,” I say. And then I am up and off to do that thing that must be done immediately or taking reminder notes for future tasks that are later lost. I’m a multi-tasker by nature. I thrive when there are lots of physical and creative tasks to challenge me. It just makes writing in this space a bit tricky. The two don’t really go hand-in-hand. Things are probably going to be spotty here in the coming months as I try to negotiate these contradictions.

The other challenge to choosing a topic comes in the form of the many things I am not allowed to write about. The many assorted secretive magazine assignments, projects, things that rhyme with “look”, etc I am supposed to keep under wraps. Unfortunately, it seems that everything in the gardens is related to these secret projects this year. Tell me I can’t speak about or write about something and you can bet it will be the single focus of my thoughts. There is nothing else to discuss but that single thing or assortment of things. Nothing. And since I am not allowed to write or speak about the things I am most enjoying right now, I am left at a loss for words.

So… ummm… in the category of Things I Can Talk About….

I made some stuff this weekend. A film maker was coming by on Sunday night to shoot the roof garden for a short film she is making and so I naturally thought, “Gee, I have nothing better to do, what with the fifty million things on my to-do list so why not make a skirt for the occasion!” I am often most inspired when time is limited. The skirt is a reworking of an old skirt that was so long and bulky it looked like wardrobe for “Big Love.” It had a useless and heavy piece that wrapped around the front like a faux wrap, making the skirt weigh a ton and not suitable for summer gear. So I took it apart, chopped it down, resized it, and put it together as a slightly a-line skirt. I then drew the little seedling illustrations onto potato halves and printed with fabric paint. I was a bit distracted, applying the first print askew so that the “seedlings” look more like Ginkgo leaves, but whatever. It works. The end.

I wanted to make good use of the potato stamps while they were still viable so I sewed up a new runner for our small table. It is dark chocolate brown (everything in brown!) with a light linen strip that I printed in green. I would take a picture to show you but the light isn’t right in the kitchen and I hate using a flash. And if I get up to do one more thing this post will never be done. I also sewed up coasters for the living room (did not use the stamp), a little catnip pillow for the cat (She actually rests her head on it!) and hemmed a curtain hung with a raw edge over a year ago. Getting shit done! And adding new tasks to the list. Woo!

Plantings

In the category of actual gardening… where do I begin? The community garden is pretty much planted. As far as this stage goes anyways. I have a few secondary things that I want to get in soon and there are a few seedlings currently residing in the roof’s “waiting area” that I REALLY want to squeeze in somehow. But how? I’ve cultivated quite a knack for making something out of nothing but there are two things I can’t make for the life of me: Making money grow on trees and making more space. The space is maxed out and can’t be maxed any further.

The plant I especially can’t let go of is the ‘Haley’s Purple Comet’ tomato. The seeds arrived a little late so this seedling had a late start falling behind the other seedlings that were planted out long ago. I tried this variety at a tomato tasting party last year and HAD to have it. It produces the most delicious, small, dark purple fruit. Back in the 80′s when Halley’s Comet was coming around for its once in a lifetime world tour I got a cheap telescope for The Holidays and hoped with nerd-like enthusiasm to catch a glimpse of the comet despite the fact that it wasn’t really visible from our side of the earth. I never did see it but I did spend a few nights looking at the stars and the moon or gazing up from the top bunk of my bunk beds at the poster of the moon that came with the telescope that I had affixed to the ceiling with tacks. Sometimes those tacks fell on me in my sleep, that’s how dedicated I was to astronomy.

If I could allow my skin to be pierced in my sleep by falling tacks then damn it, I can find a spot for this tomato! The comet has a special place in my heart so how can I resist a dark tomato named after it? I have GOT to find a space for this plant but there is nothing that can give. There are no plants to be removed. There is no more space!! My last ditch attempt will be to get another container… to put where, I don’t know. It’s a horrible dilemma.

Cat Scat

Last week, on an impromptu late evening visit to the garden I laid down some fresh compost in an area I was set to plant later in the week. When I went back a few days later the local cat, whom we call Crazy, had used that spot for a litter box. Delightful! It wouldn’t be enough to simply remove the poo because once a cat has claimed that spot they like to go back to it again and again. And based on the evidence it was clear that Crazy REALLY liked that spot. Luckily this was just a casual visit. I hadn’t arrived with an arm full of seedlings to plant. Instead, a friend and I had stopped at the garden to sit under the trees with our coffees on the way back from the market. I had a couple of oranges in my sack so I peeled them and scattered the peels all over the area. It worked! When I arrived back a few days later the area was untouched.

The Roof

I’ve entered the home stretch! I’ve planted the bulk of it and cleaned up the mess. I was actually able to lay down our twig table runner and candles last night which marks the first time anyone has been able to use the seating area for its intended purpose since I started hardening off seedlings well over a month ago. We’ve been eating lots of salads and the peas are coming in strong. We’re just days away from the first ripe strawberry. I’m most impressed by my potato plants. They are already getting close to the top of the garbage can they are growing in. The Nicotiana alata flowered for the first time a few days ago and I’ve got peppers forming earlier than ever. Everything looks so lush and smells wonderful. I can’t help brushing my hands over the various smellerific plants every time I walk past them. who needs store-bought perfume when you have a garden?

There WILL Be Onions

I am still working on getting warm season transplants into the community garden plot. I’m still working on same on the roof for that matter. I was a little gun shy this spring, following on the heels of last year’s June 5 Curcubit killing cold snap. While that didn’t happen this year, I was relieved to have played it safe when a reader wrote in reporting a snowfall on June 11 in their part of North America. June 11! The horrors!

Regardless of timing, one thing is for sure: the onion harvest is out of control! I’ve always been fortunate when it comes to onions but I’ve hit some kind of personal record this year and it is only June. I foresee a lot of onions in our future, especially given that I planted more onion sets a while back, and have a whole tray of onion seedlings sitting out on the roof waiting to be planted.

If you look at early spring shots of my community garden it looks like I am growing an onion and garlic garden more than anything. I mentioned that I would be pulling many of them up, replacing them with new warm season transplants as planting got underway. Well…. earlier this week on one such occasion I brought back an entire box of onions. And I brought another box back last night. I know I’m writing this like it is some kind of blight but I am an actually embarrassingly proud. Last night I walked my bike back from the community garden, careful to avoid spilling my bounty all over the street and proud as a peacock secretly hoping someone would exclaim, “Wow look at all those onions!” To which I would proudly reply, “Yep. Grew them myself. And this is only the half of them!” And then I would hand them a bunch. Because I’m onion wealthy and I like to spread the love. This all played out in my head like a King of Kensington-style fantasy sequence. Except in my version I’m the Onion Queen of Parkdale. In real life I walked silently with nary a sideways glance from passing neighbours and arrived home to an empty building. It was another 30 minutes before my neighbour knocked on the door for coffee and I could finally turn to the giant box waiting in the hall and shout, “Dude, check out my onions!”

And I’m not done yet. Nope, there are currently craploads of full-sized bunching onions left in spaces that I will be replacing with some of the straggling transplants this weekend. We are about to experience an onion gold rush over here! And if bunching onions were worth their weight in gold we’d be selling out and moving to a cliff side house with an ocean view. Except in reality that box of onions might fetch a couple of dollars at best and we’re really just standing around starring at it and wondering what to do with such an enormous bounty. I’ve already roasted a a few and have considered pickling a few more. One reader suggested Korean Scallion Pancakes. That sounds delicious and we will definitely be trying those this weekend.

Since you all had such wonderful, creative ideas for using rhubarb I have to ask, What do you do with your onion bonanza? I’m especially asking about the bunching onions because they have a lot of greens and I’d like to use those if I can rather than just tossing them into the compost.

All In the Family

Yesterday I spent eleven hours helping my brother Jay become a container gardener. The original plan was to show up with a few supplies, have lunch, and spend two hours tops setting up. In and out. Back to work by 2pm.

Or not.

It was just supposed to be two large containers. I didn’t want to overwhelm him. In fact I often warn new gardeners to start out slow — especially container gardeners since the demands are higher. So what I did was ignore my own advice and give over rational thinking to his enthusiasm and my own long-awaited dream of having a gardening sibling.

My brother has grown the odd houseplant in the past, many of which I have saved from a slow road to certain death. Like the wiry dracena he left for dead which I saved by cutting the top off and starting again. When he moved the last time he decided he wanted it back, a request I found interesting but didn’t really mind given that I had kept it more out of mercy than anything else. I find it difficult to turn my back on a plant in need, a personality quirk that at times makes me the crazy cat lady of the plant world. When I showed up to his apartment yesterday morning, that same dracena was sitting in an appropriately-sized pot with about an inch and a half of soil in the bottom. Not exactly a sight that says he is ready to take more on. In all fairness he also had a large palm that looked pretty good. But still.

During lunch we discussed what he might like to grow. I had brought along a determinate tomato, a large oregano, dill, and some mint from my own stash because he had expressed an interest in growing herbs. I knew he loved tomatoes and I thought he could handle ‘Czech’s Bush’ which is a really hardy little plant that produces medium-sized fruit. After lunch we stopped at a few local stands that carried plants picking up an assortment of herbs including: tarragon (I got one for myself too), sage (despite the fact that I grow enough to feed the millions), rosemary (yep I have a giant one of them, too), purple basil, garlic chives, and silver thyme. I could have supplied the last two from my own stash had I known. After dropping the plants off we headed into China Town where I knew we could get some small stakes for the tomato. I wanted to pick a few up for myself as well. He decided he wanted a hot pepper even though I grow far more hot peppers then Davin can eat (I can’t really eat hot peppers, I just like growing them). I usually give a bunch away at the end of the season.

Now, you’d think finding hot pepper plants would be an easy task in China Town. Like most parts of the city I am familiar with the little stands in the area and the plants they carry. We headed over to the section where all the plant stands are but the only pepper plants we found were aphid infested. Another on the way back also sold aphid infested plants. Eventually, we ended up purchasing a larger transplant of unknown variety from an elderly woman selling Thai chilies and shungiku from atop a stool set up on the corner. We paid too much for it, but at least it wasn’t aphid infested.

When we got back we got to the task of cleaning out the old pots that had been left there and planting everything up in fresh soil. I had brought the bag of soil from home. I could only carry one which proved to be an inadequate amount given that we now had enough plants for two more containers than previously calculated. My brother also wanted to re-pot his prized palm tree.

Quest for Soil

After picking up some caffeinated fuel we hoped on the streetcar headed to an area that seemed fail-proof. We could get there and back quickly, it was pretty direct and I knew there were at least three stores in the area selling potting soil. I like to ensure good odds. The first store with the best soil was sold out. They were also sold out of vermicompost and most soil amenders which I had been hoping to get for him. More items I could have brought from home had I had more help getting things from my place. Worse still, we added to the collection when my brother decided he wanted a beautiful ‘Chinese Five Color’ hot pepper and a Black Peppermint.

So to tally it up, we’ve now got more plants and no soil.

Next we tried to get him a watering can with no luck. The cans at the local hardware store were horrible and plastic. He decided to hold out for something nicer. Then we hit two more stores looking for soil, and while both stores had some in stock they were no good. I do not cheap out on potting soil. Over time I have developed a way of judging the quality of potting soil based on weight. I have used enough brands and picked up enough bags of soil in my gardening life to know what good potting soil weighs when it has the right ingredient proportions. If it weighs too much it has too much compost (sometimes fillers) and will compact in the pot. If it weighs too little it has no nutritional matter whatsoever and is what I call “popcorn soil.” Both brands weighed a ton in proportion to the size of their bags. They would not do.

And so we hopped on the subway, this time hoping to hit another store that I was only “pretty sure” carried a soil brand that I liked. We could have gone another route to a store I KNEW carried that brand but it was even further out of the way and we were now approaching 5pm. Once there we first went into the mall hoping to find a watering can. There were cans but they were either too expensive or had country-style heart motifs embossed into the metal — not exactly my brother’s style. I picked up a chocolate brown metal bin for myself that was later sacrificed to my brother (he’s paying me back for this one) when we discovered that we were far short on containers. We did find the soil, not exactly the one I wanted but good enough to meet my standards. Of course my brother found more plants he had to have. We picked up ‘Red Sails’ lettuce although they were a little withered looking, more basil (he HAD to have a green variety too) and a tuberous begonia.

A cab ride back with three more bags of soil that had to be carried up three flights of stairs, and a few hours of potting, cleaning, organizing and care instruction and we were finally done. As you can see from the photos some plants were left un-potted or inadequately potted because we ran out. My brother lives in an area where he should be able to score good junk finds to turn into containers and I impressed upon him the importance of putting that on project status if the basil is going to live past next Tuesday. Basil plants will not be as forgiving as the dracena.

Despite having blown an entire day and a fistful of dollars (did I mention I was treating and am now officially covered off for all birthdays and holidays until 2010) I am excited about the possibility of finally turning my brother over to the dark side. I told him I’m like one of those dealers they warn the kids about doling out free drugs until the freebies stop and the kids are hooked, possibly for life. Except the “drugs” are plants and the lifelong addiction is growing them.

I can only hope.
