Crocus ‘Yalta’

‘Yalta’ is another of the crocus varieties that I planted last fall. It has alternating purple and soft, silvery lavender petals with a delicate and long throat. Apparently it is a C. tommasinianus hybrid, which is another species that I prefer, particularly ‘Ruby Giant’.

I planted these bulbs in a section I call the Dry Bed, underneath and around a group of assorted lavenders. Most of the other bulbs in this portion of the garden are Alliums. The entire bed is mulched with pea gravel.

You can see some ‘Golden’ oregano creeping into the right side of this photo.

  1. Your crocuses are beautiful! I’m wondering how you keep the squirrels from eating them though (do the alliums deter squirrels?)…when I was growing up, my mother lost bed after bed of crocuses to the squirrels. She finally gave up on them (and tulips) and only planted daffodils, and I’ve followed suit. I’d love to be able to plant some more of the lovely spring bulbs.

  2. Those look so cute! I can’t wait till the flowers start coming up where I am. I broke down and planted a few seeds in peat pellets even though it’s like 8 weeks before last frost ><;

  3. Those are beautiful. Thank you – I’ve been searching for the perfect Mother’s Day gift and now I’ve found it.
