Georgia (Alas, Without Peaches)

Just a heads up to say that I’m going to be speaking at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens in just a few weeks. I am very much looking forward to this first trip to Georgia, although I have been forewarned that I will miss the peach season that is practically synonymous with the state. For the record, the Niagara Region turns out some pretty good peaches, too. I am eating one as I write this.

When: Wednesday, September 21
7 p.m.
Where: Alston Lecture, Atlanta Botanical Gardens
1345 Piedmont Avenue NE
Atlanta, GA 30309

p.s. If you have any suggestions for things to do and see in and around Atlanta or Athens, I am all ears!

  1. Apparently the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta is one of the best (and definitely the largest) aquariums on earth – and they have whale sharks!

Also, don’t know if you have any interest/time/money to get some ink, but my favorite tattoo artist on earth resides in Athens, GA… check out his art regardless of whether you’re interested in getting inked <3

    Have fun!

  2. Visited Atlanta this past March and stayed within walking distance of Piedmont Park and the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. Enjoyed the gardens, their greenhouses and art installations. The Georgia Aquarium is a must. Forget Coca Cola World. The High Museum of Art was worth a visit. The Atlanta History Center with it’s collection of Civil War artifacts is intense. Enjoyed eating at The Flying Biscuit Cafe; bought most of our food from the Whole Foods Market and liked Einstein’s Restaurant.

  3. I spent six wonderful, mostly-sober years in Athens, and Mom still lives in Marietta. The Aquarium is, indeed, huge and awesome – definitely go if you get a chance. Downtown Athens and UGA’s North Campus are, in my opinion, worth a visit. If you get by Athens, check out Farm 255 – organic and local food, with some really good brewskies. Also, State Botanical Gardens ftw. Thankfully for traffic’s sake, Georgia is playing at Ole Miss that weekend. Have fun!

  4. I highly recommend Cakes & Ale in Decatur — a local restaurant serving farm-fresh food that is so unbelievably delicious. I will be back in town for a business trip in September, and I’ve already got a reservation to go again…

  5. Wow! That botanical garden is one of my favorites! If you’re a Gone With The Wind fan, the Margaret Mitchell house is in Hotlanta (srsly, one of the hottest places I’ve ever visited). I also enjoyed the market at Piedmont Park. :)

  6. Wow! I can’t wait to come hear your presentation. I’ve been following your blog for quite awhile now, and love your approach to gardening.

I, too, began blogging (this year) on urban gardening in the Southeast (USA). Working with a designer now and the new, upgraded site should be running by Oct. 1 – if not sooner. Would love to link my site to yours, and vise versa.

Flying Biscuit in Candler Park is the original location, but not what it once was, I’m afraid. Try eating at Homegrown, a little hole in the wall restaurant on Memorial Drive. Also, Carroll Street Cafe, Stone Soup, Young Ausustine’s – all of which are in the Grant Park/Cabbagetown neighborhoods in Atlanta.

We share Canadian heritage – my father’s side. Drinking some afternoon tea as I post. I’m looking forward to meeting you Sept. 21.

  7. Say yes to the Georgia Botanical Garden in Athens! http://www.uga.edu/botgarden/events.html
On your way there from Atlanta, I recommend eating at the World Peace Cafe in Sandy Springs. Continue along to Roswell to enjoy its historic houses, fun galleries, shops and restaurants. Then head over to 316 to make your way to Athens; break up the drive by exiting at Pleasant Hill Road to locate the nearby Mega Mart for their large Korean produce section and food kiosks. You may want some rock’n tunes or a good conversationalist with you because the rest of the drive down 316 is fairly rural. Enjoy your visit!

  8. It was such a treat meeting you at The 5 & 10 in Athens! I trust your pals showed you a good time during the rest of your stay.
